The $277 million redevelopment of St George Hospital includes a new seven-storey Acute Services Building to be built above the new Emergency Department on Gray Street which was completed in October 2014.
The Acute Services Building will provide an enhanced model of care. The project also provides long term planning flexibility for the hospital.
The Acute Services Building will include:
Cardiac intensive care
Extra operating theatres
Extra acute inpatient beds
There will be some refurbishment works to improve access between the existing Clinical Services Building and the Tower Ward Block.
The multi-storey car park located on Gray Street will receive an additional two storeys. This extension of the car park will be towards the end of the redevelopment and is scheduled for completion in mid-2018.
The redevelopment is a major investment by the NSW Government and will meet the future needs of patients by delivering healthcare services for the needs of the local area and beyond.
The design of the Acute Services Building above the new Emergency Department will allow services to be collocated so patients can be quickly assessed and treated.
The NSW State Government announced $307 million in funding for the project in February 2015.
With the project now being fast-tracked by six months, $30 million will be saved without any reduction in the size of the project or the clinical services delivered.
Construction for the new Acute Services Building commenced in early 2016.
The new Acute Services Building is being fast-tracked by the NSW Government and will be completed six months early in 2017. The refurbishment works are scheduled for completion in 2018.
