Acute Services Building now open
The St George Hospital Acute Services Building (ASB) was officially opened by the Premier, The Hon Gladys Berejiklian and the Minister for Health, the Hon Brad Hazzard.
Behind the scenes, the building was being commissioned ahead of the official opening and the first services commenced their move in late October.
The new building features:
- A 52 bed intensive care unit
- A high dependency unit
- Cardiac catheterisation unit
- Eight digital and interventional operating theatres (complementing the current eight operating theatres and thereby doubling the number of operating theatres)
- 128 inpatient beds
- A sterilising services department
- A rooftop helipad (so that patient transfers have a direct route from the helipad to Intensive Care, Emergency and theatres)
- Office support areas and
- An impressive Atrium, which provides a critical linkage from the new building to the existing Emergency Department, Tower Ward Block and Clinical Services Building.

History Wall – a new feature
A much-travelled corridor in the St George Hospital now has a new feature – a history wall of historical images of the Hospital.
The images have a strong architectural theme, honouring the physical facilities that have constituted the Hospital over time, including contemporary photographs of the new Acute Services Building – the tallest building in Kogarah.

It includes a new 55 space street level car park, new hospital entrance and a new drop-off zone.
